  • FamousMathProbs19b: The rational number line and irrationalities

In this video we present a basic and profound solution to the most important and fundamental problem in mathematics (which is: How to model the continuum?) This is the rational number line. Our presentation is geometric, assuming a prior theory of affine geometry: this balances the far more familiar arithmetic approach. We briefly outline a view of a more algebraic and logical orientation towards mathematics which rests on the rational number line as the basic continuum. Here is a real alternative to the current set-up of modern mathematics---very briefly sketched. We then discuss a projective view of the rational line, with constructions going back to 19th century mathematicians von Staudt and Hilbert. Basic properties of the rationals are described. Then we discuss the introduction of ...

Ariely was an undergraduate at Tel Aviv University and received a Ph.D. and M.A. in cognitive psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a Ph.D. in business from Duke University. His research focuses on discovering and measuring how people make decisions. He models the human decision making process and in particular the irrational decisions that we all make every day. Sobre la racionalidad. On rationality. Sutitulado en español. Below, presentation in spanish and in english. Fragments of the plenary "Rationality and Experience in Philosophical Practice" 13th International Conference on Philosophical Practice (ICPP), University of Belgrade, 15-18 August 2014 Roxana Kreimer, Gerardo Primero, Lydia Amir. What is rationality? Are emotions irrational? How can we link reason and intuition? How rational are human beings? How can reason help us to clarify thoughts and make better decisions? How can we link reason and intuition? Postmodernism as one more skeptical crisis in the history of culture. Its positive and negative aspects. When a person acts as a bastard, is he rational? How does the author of an idea influences us in the value that we give to it? How authority figures distort our judgment. What view of rationality can we have when we know that human beings are semi-rational? What things are irrational? Irrationalities of some psychologists and some practical philosophers. The two systems of rationality: thinking slow and thinking fast. Rational and irrational spirituality.
